Elder roots under a fence
« on: March 04, 2008, 16:54 »
excuse me if this has arisen before. I have taken over a neglected garden near my own and encountered particularly sneaky elder trees/bushes. I have cut it all down and find each one is half under a fence so difficult to dig out. Cant take out the fences and put back after because of the relationship between my dogs and next doors dogs ( not good) so would welcome suggestions to kill in situ (the elder roots not the dogs)
Thanks
R

Now the EU have driven the nail into the ammonium sulphamate coffin lid. I'm not sure what to suggest, if you can get hold of it use that, sometimes called amicide or deep root by growing success. Try some of the smaller hardware stores or lottie shops, I have still found that liquid club root stuff for sale  near me

in my experience with elder the only sure way of getting rid of it is to dig it out, everything i have tried on these trees in the past has failed including having a fire over the top of one!

elders produce berries and flowers which are both edible.  My berries get collected by a kind chap who turns them into wine. Ditto the flowers  :D
I keep mine in bounds by lopping em now and again

Would sodium chlorate deal with roots, or is it only good for stumps that won't regrow?  You'd need to be very careful not to set the fence alight, though.

It'll kill them and the ground , it's been treated these days so its not quite so flammable
