Hi i was just wondering to feed a family of 4 (1 adult 3 children 1 child eats like a horse!) How many potatoes do i need to plant? Probably another stupid question but i dont have a clue how many potatoes you get from a potatoe? Does that make sense?

You can expect anything between 12-20 tubers per plant for main crop, less for most earlies, but if well earthed and fed, they will near or match that too.

Don't be too ambitious for a start, a bad year catches out experienced ones too!

Depends, how much you eat, really, around 3x20 earlies and 3x20 main we have.

Its about how you're storing them between harvest that's important.

I have got 52 seed spuds, mostly salad and first earlies with around 12 maincrop.  next year probably I'll alter the ratio.  hadn't considered that a bigger maincrop spud might produce bigger seed spuds so bought the same weight of each variety so will have more or the ealry/salad ones as the seed were smaller so more per kilo!  Am feeding a family of 1 adult and two teens, plus one small bub who I suspect will be big enough to consume the odd spud or two by autumn time.

I only do about 20 tubers of earlies and then about 60 or so tubers of lates. I am just coming to the end of last year's crop now. I store them in hessian sacks in a wooden shed. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 grown up boys but one eats few potatoes, my Dad likes some as well. I am trying to plant enough to see me from one season to the next. I am getting there as last year I has finished using them just after Christmas.

Joy Larkcom covers how many to plant for an average family etc in her veg handbook, not just spuds but all veg. Good read and I'd recommend it to all veggie growers

Just planted my Wilkinson's Rocket, the bag was 3Kg if I remember and contained 39 seed potatoes,

planted into 4 rows with about 18ins spacing , having planted too close last year , I thought I would allow more ventilation in case of blight

Blimey, you must be right down south, we still have 4-6 weeks to wait yet in Hull.  :cry:
