Alarmingly thin melon vines.
« on: July 16, 2023, 14:34 »
Good afternoon non tennis fans!
I am growing melons up trellis's in the greenhouse but the vines seem awfully thin. Do you think they will thicken out?  I realise I will have to support any fruit I'm lucky to grow.
Cheers,  Tony/
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

i think i have seen people using netting/tights to hold up the weight if you are luck enough to get some to grow.  i grow mine on a humped up piece of ground, through black plastic and had an amazing crop last year, although the weather was perfect for them.

I think netting bags (type used for onions, citrus, etc. at grocery stores) could be hung from a trellis to support a melon.

Similar to the first suggestion from goose.

Just a question. Has anyone ever grown a decent melon in the U.K.? Just wondering.

I suggest having a look at:  https://www.allotment-garden.org/fruit/melons-growing/
Apparently, yes!

Good morning missmoneypenny, we have a melon, about the size of a lemon and one the size of an almond.  We will keep watching!

Cheers,  Tony.

Sorry, I remain very sceptical. My neighbor is trying to grow melons outdoors and I’ll eat my brassica netting if he succeeds.
Maybe in a greenhouse, in a hot summer ( which we’re not having). Sorry to be Scrooge here but I just don’t believe it.

Sorry to say but, our melon vines appear to be wilting!

Cheers,  Tony.

Sadly it looks as though I am failing to grow a melon   The vine by the door started to look limp and now the condition has traveled along the whole row of greenhouse melons. :(
Cheers,  Tony.
