Newbie question: how many seeds in a nursery?
« on: May 07, 2022, 12:34 »
Dear fellow gardeners,

I am very new in growing veggies in the garden and of course it’s trial and error. I planted most from seeds via nurseries. Some seed packets tell you how many seeds per compartment like with peas and green beans but many don’t say. It have sown an outdoor variety in nursery compartments but was wondering how many seeds you actual need in each nursery compartment?

Many thanks in advance for your advice

I'm not entirely clear what you mean by nursery compartment, sorry. Are these inserts for seed trays (which are about the size of an A4 piece of paper), with a number of modules in?

If so, I usually put one seed per module.

If you mean something else, then do clarify  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hard to say really as it depends on the size of the module & type of seed. Beetroot, radish, onion seeds not sets, I sow 4 or 5 seeds to a 24 module tray- full seed tray size. Lettuce , I’d prick out to 1 in a module of the same size. Tomato seedlings just 1 per that size module.
Any other plants you have?

It also depends on how you mean to grow them. If, for instance, you want to grow spring onions in little individual clumps of up to half a dozen, then you'd sow that amount of seed in each module. Sometimes it's wise to sow more than one seed per module in any case, to make up for the fact that not all seeds germinate. After emergence, you'd thin them out to the strongest seedling. With older seeds, where the packet has been opened the previous year or even earlier (some seeds - such as tomatoes - will keep for up to 10 years) it's sometimes wise to sow several seeds to make up for more unreliable germination, thinning to the strongest if they all happen to come up.
