« on: October 08, 2020, 09:18 »
we picked all of our squashes yesterday and although we had a good crop of butternut squashes some had started to split this is the second year we grew squashes and as i said this is the better year for cropping than last but not sure what's causing them to split can anyone give us some advise why there splitting?

Some of my butternuts have done the same thing.
I think the hot dry weather made the skins 'set' early and then we had rain which made them swell more, so the skins split :(
The other squashes didn't split, because of their harder skins, but it meant that they didn't get as big as they normally do

Yes, it's the same cause as tomatoes splitting, generally ascribed to inconsistent watering, except that the watering is done by the rain not the gardener.

interesting to note you've all had the same problem the other thing is for those of you who grow butternut squash do you grow yours on a fence or trellis or on the open ground?

as we grew our squashes  on a raised bed but I'm thinking of growing our squashes the same as we grow our pumpkins on the open ground because we grew Uchiki Kuri with the pumpkin marrow and courgette and they turned out brilliant
