Well my araucana has done it she has laid her very first egg about time too is what I say.  She has been unsettled for the last week so I had a feeling she would soon be laying. Unfortunately she didn't make the nest box but I will forgive her this time.  :D

I rang my friends and text hubby as I was so excited   I'm sure they think I am totally mad

my aracana started laying last week, I was surprised at how big the eggs were for a smallish bird, shes much smaller than our sussex hens but her egg matched some of them.

When our little hens (they're actually supposed to be my daughters pets but I keep saying they're mine)  started laying we thought they were so beautiful we didn't want to break them.  So I put a small hole in either end & blew them.  Scrambled egg & intact shell for prosperity

We did the same only the shell got broken after a few days!!
It was exciting though. I still get a good feeling seeing them dissapearing into the hut and waiting for them to come back out, knowing there will be a present left for me to collect!
Our araucana's eggs are the smoothest of all our hennies eggs.

I think araucanas are beautiful birds and the cockerels splendid. I would be interested to hear if they are flighty or not and how  they fit in a mixed flock :?:

I have only got the one araucana at the moment but hoping to hatch some eggs very soon.  My girl Emu is living with a bantam silkie and a polish X pekin girl about the same size as the silkie.  Emu is large fowl and is the biggest of them all. Up until now she was at the bottom of the pecking order despite her size, whether that now changes we will wait and see.  She's not flighty at all quite the opposite to be honest.  :)

I have had two eggs now, she appears to be laying every two days so another one must be imminent today.  I will see if I can get a photo of her and her eggs over the weekend as I am a little pre-occupied today as I have quail hatching as I type this.

Azzie (our araucana) is not flighty. She's very docile to hold and sits so still when I check her over. My children all pick her up very easily. We have a mixed flock and although she's the smallest, she fits in very well...in fact she causes me the least problem of all of them. :)
