Thermometer
« on: September 04, 2019, 12:20 »
I think I will use on my terraces at night particularly in the winter to check the difference between my temperature versus met office.
First do they take into account wind chill?
As it's terrace I was going measure in different locations.
Digital or none digital? anyone tried out both?. And do I have spend more for accuracy?
Thanks

Met office is a general temp, too many other influences to be accurate.

I have a PWS (personal weather station) and for the most part is not that far off what the met office give and remember the met office is forcast also their readings could be taken from a couple of miles away say the nearest airport to you.

Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Also any temperature measurements reported by the met office will have been made using a calibrated thermometer, something most amateurs won't have themselves which could easily mean a couple of degrees different - I have 2 digital thermometers in the greenhouse at home that have their sensors only a few inches apart but which give, on average, different readings of 1.8°C.

The met office clearly state that you need to knock off up to 3 degrees in rural areas. There are no airports near me.

A calibrated thermometer in my garden? The met office thermometers are not in my garden. Why do you continue to use your digital thermometers if they are no good?

Which one? your idea is looking like the best. Specially as my garden is terraced. I suspect with shadow some parts are cooler than others, a lot cooler during the day. I have noticed plant growth can be substantially different along each individual terrace and from terrace to terrace.  I quite fancy this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076S5J7LM/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3UMU276GPXXPH&psc=1
What do you reckon. 3 sensors.

The building at the top is double glazed and I will insulate the ceiling in the winter. There's a raised bed on 3 sides. 12" high 14" wide. Split into 3 parts so I can follow the normal rules on rotation.

The PWS I have is the Netamo Weather Station.
It uses one external sensor, this is on the shadey side of the garden, a rain gauge and indoor sensors which monitor temps, pressure, CO2 and noise levels (can tell when Mrs is sat watching telly or hovering)
I dont go to mad with it but I find it works for me and gives me more acurate weather than a app.
You can buy additional sensors.
There is an app which is on my phone and I can access via a comp on the tinterweb.

Well I bought it https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076S5J7LM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Putting all 3 sensors and the weather station side by side the difference was half  a degree. Humidity difference was 2%. Very pleased with range. I get a reading from the top of garden to  anywhere in the house (a bungalow to be exact). Not placed any in the garden yet. As I intend on putting some sort of weather protection over them. Say backing with a bit of a roof, as I cant see them being total weatherproof. Temperature variation for greenhouse (normal roof not glass) yesterday miserable weather was 10 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius. Need to insulate the roof to narrow that. Had the insulation delivered 100 millimetre solid stuff silver backed. Builder says it's twice as good as rockwool. That should do the trick.
