Cucumber, Broad Bean Problem -related
« on: July 29, 2016, 07:24 »
Hi All,

Take a look at the Pic.  The Cucumber was healthy last Sunday but today has developed some fungal disease similar to the attack on my Broad beans nearby.  Are these diseases related?  What can I do to protect the cucumber plants, the broad bean plants will be grubbed up and burnt today although the crop will be saved.

Does anybody know what the disease is called?

Thank you for any help on this one.

The new growth on the cukes looks ok, so I'd just pick off the worst leaves and give them a good watering.

broad beans have rust by the look of it. as for the cukes the discolouration looks a bit like downy mildew. Any chance of a close up of the underside of the leaves?

Just spent the last half hour searching what's left of my brain, and more helpfully the internet, and I agree with Dr_Pepper on both counts (resolution of the bean pic isn't high enough to see individual rust pustules but it's hard to think what else it could be.)

Many pics of downy mildew on cucumber plants available for you to compare yours with.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thank you all,  Will go down to the plot this afternoon and take a close-up of the underside of the cucumber leaf.

Beans have rust, don't panic, mine get it most years. Just harvest your beans before it gets too bad. The cucumbers look fairly normal.

As the broad bean crop ends, the leaves do turn rusty and die down, that's normal, does not affect the last crops of beans. If you cut down the broad beans to about six inches before they die, they will grow again for a few more weeks and will get another last crop.
Some lower cucumber leaves normally turn yellow and a few within the plant, that's normal, just snip them off. The rest of your plant looks healthy.
When watering, water at soil level and mist the leaf area.
Do not water too much when cucumbers first start growing as the plants become weak, but when established water more but be careful not to flood them.
Might be worth allowing them to climb up something better, so they are not too crowded. I build a good four  feet by six feet rectangle with cross strings all the way up for mine in the greenhouse that allows the tendrils to attach to.
