Courgette problem!
« on: June 20, 2016, 23:34 »
Planted out my courgette plants few days ago and went tonight to plot to find them reduced to stalks!
Am I too late to sow some more?
Also sowed burgess buttercup squash few weeks ago and out of 15 plants, only 3 have germinated.
Has anyone else had problems with germination? Have kept them warm and not overwatered.
So disapointedly so far have managed to get 4 butternut squash to grow out of 6, 3 burgess squash out of 15 and now have no courgettes  :(
Have a large area of plot free for these crops and it looks very bare  :(

I think you'll be fine sowing courgettes now.  I expect you'd get something.  Who knows what the autumn will be like may go on for a while.  I normally have a couple of sowings anyway.  An early one which is cropping nicely now and a later one.  The later sown courgettes are at the first true leaf stage and will go out in a few days.  I expect you'll only be two weeks behind my second sowing.  So I certainly hope you'll get some fruits.

I sowed some towards the end of June last year and got a crop when my early sown ones were getting a bit tired and mildewy.

Go to your garden centre and buy some plants - also some slug pellets.

Make sure the slug pellets contain ferric phosphate which only kills slugs and is not poisonous to other wildlife or pets. Avoid using slug pellets containing metaldehyde which is a poison to most things and stays in the soil for a long time.

There are alternatives to pellets such as beer traps or going at night with a torch and picking them off or poke them with a spike.

I have a neighbour who uses strulch to mulch dahlia beds and swears by it to deter slugs (it contains copper). Does anyone have experience of this?

Thanks all.
Have sown some more today and they are under glass in a warm conservatory so hoping for germination.  :)
Will make sure slug pellets are around them!
Might have a look at local garden centre too just in case.
Hoping my remaining burgess buttercup germinate too.

I normally do this each year and it generally works well (unless you don't want yet more courgettes   )

I really like courgettes so happy with lots!
Just been to plot this morning and one of the plants is hanging onto a leaf so hoping that one will survive and new ones germinate

That looks interesting, nowhere near me stocks it though. Might mention it at the Garden club, maybe if enough of us preordered some they would be able to order a pallet & then distribute it for us

I had a thick layer of Strulch on my bulb/dahlia bed this year. Lovely stuff to use, good to look at but expensive by the bag. However it didn't keep the slugs away from the zinnia seedlings I put out. I got so fed up that I decided to use nematodes but the disadvantage of that is that I had to clear all the remaining Strulch away first, as the nematode mix has to go on the soil. So I wouldn't recommend it as a slug control, though it's a highly desirable product otherwise and I'd use it a lot if it were a tenth of the price.
