Left over seed potatoes
« on: June 11, 2016, 12:55 »
I have a few left over first and second early seed potatoes.  They have chunky green chits on them.  Is there anything I can do with them?

Will they grow if planted out.  Or I have some earlies growing in pots in the greenhouse, what would happen if I plant these leftovers in there once I've harvested.

The are clearly still viable so they'll grow just fine outside, although they will be running the gauntlet of blight more than if they'd been planted at the usual time.

Would have thought it's probably a bit hot in summer in the GH for spuds, but I've not actually tried it.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have some like yours, large green chits, but nowhere to plant them. The were sat in the greenhouse but then got shunted outside when they were in the way. They've just been sat in a seed tray in the shade in a semi-dormant state.

I was thinking about experimenting if I can just keep them in this chitted state and then plant them in the greenhouse in the Autumn for new potatoes at Christmas. The alternative is the compost heap, so what the heck.

I had some Charlotte 2nd earlies hanging around which I planted in builders buckets a few weeks ago and they're romping away.

Give them a go. Nothing to lose other than a few spuds.

Going to try both.  Some in the ground.  Delay planting the others for a bit longer, then in pots outside, brought in in Sept.
Thanks  everyone.
