Another question for the potato experts
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:23 »
Hi,
My last tub of potatoes, from last years crop, have chitted themselves. They were right at the back of a cool dark garage, and because they were behind the car stored in there, they have been overlooked. Some of the chits ar almost a foot long.
Will these be ok to plant? I was thinking about planting them about 9inches down, with some compost and chicken pellets, and then earthing them up.
What do the experts think?

Thanks
Jon

Having chitted in the dark the chits will be brittle and weak, the exact opposite of what you really want to achieve, and are unlikely to survive the planting process.

The spuds will eventually produce new shoots, so you can plant them, although growing your own saved potatoes is never really recommended in case they are harbouring diseases or pests from last year.

You wouldn't be the first person to try it and get away with it though.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Thanks for the advice. I may sort through them today and look for the shortest and healthiest looking ones. I will try planting them in a spare bed, well away from other crops.  I will let you know the result later in the season.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks again
Jon
