I beat solid stems with the back of an axe. Anything that won't go through a 1/4" seive (apart from non-compostable debris) goes back to the start of the cycle. I look at it that it acts as a innoculator for the 'virgin' compost.

If I can't remember something I go to the top of the stairs. :wacko:

I place the stems on the ground or the compost bin & chop them into slices with a sharp spade. Never see them again, now avocado stones, they're another story

I stab them through several times with a sharp knife when cutting up the fruit and then put the stones in the compost bin. The holes let water/ bacteria etc and the middles rot away eventually. The shell bit seems to hang around for a while though, but they just go back in next time around

I've rescued 2 that were growing a shoot & potted them up following my sisters advice,she's got a 5ft avocado tree in her bathroom from doing just that. I also rescued 2 more last year & gave them to some poor unsuspecting fellow alotmenteers, not heard how they are doing though.
Must be the heat in the compost bin that gets them to shoot

I put avocado (and all other vegetable scraps from the kitchen) into the blender for feeding the worms. Reduces the food suitably to accomodate for their very small mouths and allows them to process it efficiently. I have 8 worm farms so I utilise quite a deal of compostable material in keeping the blighters feed and happily working away at making me quite fantastic compost.

Anything bulky from the garden can be reduced by a few passes of the lawnmower. Soon sees it reduced to manageable pieces. I'd relish a mulcher though.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.
