Flubenvet feed for 11 week old pullets
« on: May 30, 2015, 19:15 »
My new girls had not been wormed at the farm where I bought them (farmer said they had been 'wormed' with ACV but I know that's not enough) so I need to do them. I usually worm my girls with Flubenvet layers pellets but the little ones are currently eating growers pellets. Can I give them layers for 7 days and then go straight back to the growers afterwards?
Hens - Clara (Bluebell) & little newbies Martha (Black Sussex) & Dora (Speckled Maran)
RIP Margot, Geraldine, Hettie,  Ruby & Tilly :(
Cats - Herbie (LH black moggy) Louie (Seal Point Ragdoll) Jazzi (Dilute Torbie) Peggy (g&w stray)
RIP Ollie (Seal Point Ragdoll) :(

If they are being kept separately from the older girls, I would hang on and worm them when they are just about to join the main flock, or when they switch to layers, whichever comes first.

I've had just feathered youngsters before and if they have grown well and shown no signs of worms, I've always held off worming until they were a bit older.

If push comes to shove, I would just go for it.  It's not ideal for them to eat layers, but better that than be carrying a big worm burden  :)

We have sectioned off the main run with a temporary mesh frame to give them about 12 sq ft. TBH we've done this mainly to stop them being chased and pecked by the bigger girls. They're only in there for the morning as in the afternoon when the older girls go out to FR we remove the frame and let the little ones out into the main run, giving them access to about 80sq ft. They absolutely love this and jump, flap and run round in circles!! This does mean, however, that they are sharing the run for part of the day. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of keeping them completely separate. I know some people put Flubenvet powder onto grapes and such like but I don't know how much to use.

I don't use grapes, but the scoop in the box is the dose for 2kg of feed and they need medication for 7 days.  It's a matter of scaling up or down.  If 2kg would feed your lot for 7 days, then either mentally or actually split a scoop into 7 and then the same again - each 7th has to be divided by the number of birds you have.

I put my calculated dose of Flubenvet into treat seeds, with just a tiny bit of vegetable oil to make it stick and then split those into 7 daily portions.  If you going to use grapes, it will end up as just a little dab on each one  :)
