Cherry tree protection!?
« on: May 03, 2015, 15:00 »
Hi all I have a cherry tree that I planted a couple of years ago but I have yet to have a cherry!
Our feathers friends seem to have done rather better.
My challenge is it has grown so tall I had to prune the main branch whilst I could still reach it. I am going to try to cover it with netting this year but am wondering how to approach it and whether any of the other bird repelling techniques would work??

Any thoughts appreciated 😳😳

Many thanks HH
Keep digging

Blackbirds will move heaven and earth to get to cherries, so a comprehensive netting barrier is the only way to protect the fruit.  Make sure birds can't get in underneath the netting, because they will try  ::)

I tried putting in three very long canes with empty bottles taped to their tops, throwing soft bird netting over the top of them and closing it under the branches with clothes pegs.

It took much longer than that description implies, and was a two person job for sure.

I did get some cherries, although this nearest the outside still got pecked by birds perching against the netting --jays were the worst culprits!

One mail order firm has 'sleeves' made of, I think, environmental mesh, that you put over the branches and tie top and bottom.  I am going to make my own and see what happens.  I only have about 6 branches per tree (they are two years old), so am going to give them a try.
