Too late for winter pruning?
« on: March 10, 2015, 09:00 »
I've just realised I've forgotten to prune some new apple and pear trees planted over winter. Their only 2 years old so they really need some structural work. One, the pear is just showing signs of bud swelling. Am I too late or is it a case of better late than never?

On Friday night's Gardeners World he was pruning apple trees. So I think you will be okay. Hope so anyway as I am doing mine this week.

OK, I'll do it tonight. I put it off as I bought 2 year old half standards and they have so many branches I couldn't bring myself to cut loads of them off! Then I forgot.

I finished up mine this past week too.  Had already removed quite a bit from the smaller trees and some off the larger ones but had to get out the chainsaw for a lot of the work, as these trees are 20 yrs old and had never been pruned.  My son helped me top them out and we removed quite a bit of additional mess out of the middle.

Here's a few pics of the during and after of these 8 trees.  I left a large, branched out water sprout on one of the larger trees and weighted the branch to train it outward instead of upward.  It had already started to grow fruiting wood, so I thought I'd leave it and use it in an open space on the tree.

I've still got to get down there and dress up some of these cuts, cutting them back to the trunk and such, just overlooked some of it.

Weighing down that branch with an old flower pot and some pavers...

We don't know what we're doing but we're doing it as hard as we can!     Still have peach trees to prune a little later in the spring.
