Is this about right for over winter or am i too late?
« on: September 16, 2008, 15:59 »
I'm looking at getting some veg in my new plot to grow over the autumn/winter months. I have one bed just about ready, i'd like to get some stuff cracking whilst i prep the others for next year. These are my initial thoughts:

1. Autumn King Carrots.
2. January King Cabbage.
3. Perpetual Spinach.
4. North Forelander Cauliflower
5. Winterbror Kale.

What do you think? Too much to start with my first attempt? Also can i be start anything on the window sill for transplanting?

Cheers guys & gals your are so much better than the books!!!

Nope looks ok to me, try chard instead of spinach, I find it dont go to seed as quick and will over winter providing we dont get the really hard frosts.

I'm at a loss as to when you mean to sow and grow them.

As Aidy says all fine for over-wintering, however if you mean this round the corner winter you might well be a wee bit out of time with most of them, likely all...

Spinach Bordeaux can be sown in September direct into the plot soil. It's quite large so don't so too many. It's got lovely purple stalks and veins to the leaves, with arrow shaped leaves. I love the stuff and it will give you early green stuff next year.

Check the back of the seed packets for directions about when to sow but I think like Gobs says you're probably out of time

Thought about onion sets, shallots or garlic?  :D

Cheers for the feedback - could i start them indoors maybe, then plant under cover? Speaking to the green fingered jedis on the plot, they say give it ago you have nothing to loose. As the autumn/winters down here have been mild for the last three years?

We'll see?!

I'd try leeks too, even if they don't get thick you can use the greens in cooking, and if they are truly thin you can use the greens in salad; cut them below the surface like asparagus and they will regrow too.
There are still several green manures that you can sow too, if you have any bare ground left. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
