disturbed asparagus crowns
« on: February 21, 2015, 21:39 »
hi have very recently taken over my first allotment and have been furiously been trying to tidy up during half term.
Finely started to dig and have unearthed what looks like established asparagus, have been told by allotment neighbour
that the plot contained asparagus and it looks like i have found it. My question is how do i get it back into the ground
ie. put in as if it was a new bed and leave for a year to settle back in or can i take a small crop?
any help advice would be greatly appreciated

If you have just cut through a few roots it should be ok. Of you have chopped the crowns and damaged the dormant buds some damage may have been done. Whatever I would just leave them and see what happens.

If you haven't actually lifted them I too would leave them be.  Its a huge job to move established Asparagus crowns, and they will take a year or two before they are ready for cropping again.

At the least I would leave them to see how they crop this year.

If you've already dug them up I would just make a mound where they came from & replant & then leave well alone for a year.

Just look up how to prepare an asparagus bed for how to make the mound, they don't like to be wet, then mark the ones you replant to remind you not to harvest from those ones.
