I think next project will be turning my clayish soil to loam. That said, I can dig about a spit and a half before I hit yellow clay. I was surprised I didn't hit the water table at that point, which is a good thing.

Is that moss you've got growing around your garlic, Mushroom? If it is, then a lot of coarse grit added to the soil would help.

I too have clay soil but yearly add anything I can to help loosen it. My garlic was planted in late Oct and hasn't shown any tops yet but I'm not worried. Lots of strong roots are forming which is more important. Come spring, the tops will charge out of the soil - all 6 kilos worth. Think I got a bit carried away

It's not moss - it's like algae. I dunno what it is!   But yeah, thanks for the tip ;) Some coarse sand will be added when the garlic is pulled. Is this what you call grit?

Don't worry about it Mushy. I get it every year, just grows in the damp. It's gone as soon as you can get your hoe in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, coarse sand would work but definitely not fine sand (it would only make it more into concrete). You can also use a form of very small stone chips, or gypsum. I get that sort of green growth in a few spots my garden - usually where drainage hasn't been sorted yet. Plants in those areas tend not to do as well.
