Polytunnel prices - do they drop seasonally
« on: May 26, 2014, 18:43 »
So, Mrs B. isn't aware of this so I have to tread carefully... but I'd really like a polytunnel for next season - I've got a 6x4 greenhouse but would like to add a 'temporary' (ahem) tunnel as well.
I've noticed that the local gardening centres will (perhaps) drop prices on the blow-aways that they have when it gets to August /September - am I likely to see anything similar happen online with PT prices?

Cheers,
Balders

i was debating a long time, either a large greenhouse or polytunnel. The greenhouse dropped in price, but the tunnel never. I waited ages (another 12 months) to by my 20' x 10' polytunnel  in the hope it would drop, but it never did.

Thats what I suspected - perhaps they can be ordered from the manufacturers quickly so the retailers don't have to keep lots of PTs in stock, taking up space...

could you cover a plastic greenhouse with polytunnel sheeting?

Probably - if the greenhouse frame was metal though you would have to use a lot of protective tape where the frame and poly-plastic touched. I'm likely going to get the polytunnel plastic and build a frame from wood and blue water pipes... unless I spot a bargain polytunnel over the winter...

Try ebay, I got a large greenhouse, 20 ft polly (no cover) and a shed for £190.

this is a good cheaper idea, if you can acquire most of the material.

i've made a large tunnel using blue water pipe but i was trying to do it a bit cheaper and use 32mm pipe, most people i saw used 60mm ish pipe. i thought the pipe would be strong enough, but the smaller pipe distorts a lot and needs a lot of timber support (which can be a pain).

having said that if you can get hold of the 32mm pipe and timber free it is an option, there's a lot more chance of getting 32mm pipe rather than 60mm for nothing.

if you do use 32mm pipe and wanted pictures of mine send me a pm and i'll send some over.
