Bringing raspberries back from the dead
« on: May 31, 2014, 21:59 »
Iv recently taken on a new plot which is really overgrown, and not been looked after for a year or 2.. Amongst the weeds the are about 50 raspberry canes. Now I don't know much about raspberry a as im new to allotmenting (allotmenting, is that even a word?) but I was looking at growing them soon so it would be nice if I could help these ones out and bring them back to life. I don't know when they where last pruned but they have got quite a few berries growing on them.
What I want to know is whats my best approach? Should I dig them up and put them in pots now, or is there a better way to go about it.

I look forward to reading your replies.
Thanks in advance.
Rob

Dig up the runners and pot them up. Prepare the new bed , it's best not to re-plant in the same spot. Make sure you get every bit of the perennial weeds out of the new bed . Plant your runners giving each planting hole some bonemeal stand back and enjoy.

I would say leave them where they are for now & get the fruit off them this year, see if they taste good. If they do prepare a new bed, chop down the canes that have fruited & when the new growth comes dig that up & plant straight away in the newly prepared bed. I'm sure you've got lots of other jobs you can get on with.

Not runners as such like strawberries do but a new cane / canes grow each year from the plant... they creep along underground and send up new canes..

As rasps roots are quite shallow, I find that any unwanted (or wanted) runners pull out fairly easily.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
