Blight on the site.
« on: July 30, 2014, 00:44 »
We have just received news that blight has been confirmed on our site :(
I have lifted all my pots except the Desire. As of yet we are not affected by the cause of the great famine but we really do not want to leave anything to chance.
I know you can spray a preventative but we try to avoid using chemicals as much as possible.
They were sown some 3 weeks early this year due to the mild winter. Would it be possible to cut the tops off now to avoid the lurg or does the spray bottle need to come out.
May the fork be with you

We have cut all the greens off ours, they are now sat in the ground for two weeks till we lift them. Harvest has been great with ours and blight struck ours weeks and weeks ago.

I'd take the tops off now so you don't risk getting blight down into the potatoes rather than spraying. They should be pretty much full size by now. Mine were a decent size when I cut the tops off three weeks ago, shame I've lost all the tubers to blight :(

The tops of my Desiree had already died down and withered, due to the excessive heat I would think, because it wasn't blight. I checked by digging up a root and they were a decent size, so I've removed all the withered tops and left them in the ground for the moment. The only other maincrop I had was Picasso, which were looking a bit the worse for wear, but still reasonably green (ish), so yesterday I dug a root and there were huge, so I cut all the tops off those too. With damper weather forecast for next week, I would say blight might strike at any time, so now I don't have to worry.

I am wondering if it is too dry for blight up here in the sunny midlands. I haven't seen any yet.

I'm with azubah, we have been extremely dry in bham, our charlottes have gone over already at 12weeks due to lack of rain.

Our maincrop were planted at the same time (6/5/14) so are coming up to 13 weeks only, good foliage but oh so dry.

We have been drenching the trenches between the rows for the last 8days in the hope of a reasonable crop.

Several of the plotholders think they may have blight as the haulms have yellowed and gone over.

I think it is may be due to the heat and lack of rain, hence stress?

Same here in Coventry. No blight on the plots but plenty of yellowing leaves and die back. My charlottes died back a few weeks ago, they're a decent size though.

I bought Picassos as maincrops too, but I've recently discovered they're early maincrops. I put mine in the ground 16 weeks ago and they have almost completely died back now.
