Potato Blight reported on my lottie site!!!
« on: June 13, 2007, 22:28 »
Hi please can anyone advise me on what I should do as 2 cases of blight have been reported, dont know how close to my plot if that makes a difference, I dont know what to look for or how to treat/ prevent my crop from blight.

Any advice would be great as this is my first ever potatoe crop and I have stressed over these babies from chitting them to digging there trenches, so I dont want to lose them now. :(

Hi Greenbean this might help.

if your potatoes are are nearly ready then it shouldn't be a problem, we have it on our site (my pentland javelins had it) I lifted my earlies and the potatoes  themselves were fine though I suspect it may be on my maincrops and tomatoes.

If the disease has taken hold already then you can't really do anything. You can use something called bordeaux mixture on the crops but it needs to be before any sign blight as it's preventative only.
Organic :)

If you have signs of Potato blight remove the haulms but don't lift the potatoes for at least 10 days and you should escape most of the damage, but this needs to be done at the first signs of blight on the leaves.

To remove the halums put your feet on either side of one and pull the hallum out of the soil leaving the potatoes safe where they are.I do compost my hallums but I have a lot of compost bins ,put theminto one and the next year put the compost on to the beds that last had pots on so that the compost also follows the rotation.
