Plum Tree and pruning
« on: May 28, 2014, 15:08 »
I have this lovely little plum tree, always has tons of fruit on it, but this year there are new branches shooting all over the place and I do not know what to cut back and what to keep, ive tried online diagrams etc and youtube but I cannot find exactly what I should be doing. Do I cut these new shoots off or just some of them? and do i cut them right down the the old wood or so many buds up?  thanks guys.

Without seeing the tree it's a bit difficult but the basic principle is to try and develop a wine goblet shape if it is grown as a 'bush'. This means keeping the centre open to allow free circulation of air and let in the light for ripening the fruit. Start by pruning off any branches which are crossing others and removing any dead and weak branches then see what it looks like. Mid summer is the right time for pruning plums.

My plum is in it's 3rd season since planting and is loaded with plums.
I've read that I need to prune around this time of year and also thin out the fruit. Need some advice too!!

If I find anything that out I'll post it here ;)
I'm thinking the good Dr hessayon might have some advice...
