planting potatoes in late summer
« on: April 09, 2014, 19:41 »
I have a lot of main crop potatoes left. Desiree and orl a.  I am planning to plant some Charlotte in sacks in August or early September to go in greenhouse when it cools down.  I was thinking about my spare main crop they are not Chitted.  If I kept them somewhere reasonably cold would t hey keep for nearly 4 months to be planted in sacks.  What would the growth rate be over the winter in a greenhouse.  Thanks

They don't have to be chitted to grow and if you can plant them at the usual time, all the better. In cold months there's very little growth on potatoes, if any. Existing ones will keep but new ones won't form.

I planted some Desiree in late June last year thinking I wouldn't get much by mid August they all had blight so cut them down and left them in the ground for a couple of weeks.

When I came to dig them up I had a bumper crop.

Its worth a try if you have the seed and nothing else to go in the space.

I am unsure on whether they would keep until then though never tried.

I had some left over seed potatoes (Maris Peer and Marris Piper) which I left where they had been chitting, in front of a SW facing window that gets direct sun for a couple of hours a day in our tool storage shed (which is attached to the back of the house so doesn't get overly hot or cold). By November they had enormously stocky chits on them, in some cases around 1/3 the size of the tuber, and they seemed very healthy... but they went on the compost heap. Perhaps I should have saved them and tried to use them this year!

Once they've chitted, they won't last the winter unless planted out before then. The energy has been sapped by the sprouts. I always find missed potatoes growing next spring, but they hadn't chitted.

They'd grow ok until October (if you can keep the blight off them) but once the days shorten and get cold, there would be very little further growth. You may get a small crop if you're lucky.
