This question is from a friend in work who is just starting out. She has moved house and wants to know are there any strawberrys that would do ok if she puts them into a shaded area. What variety should she be looking at. The sunny side of her garden has been set aside for fruit trees/bushes.

Strawberries get their sweetness from the sun, which is where they like it. They'll suffer a bit in part shade but they really don't like full shade. Part shade just makes for a later harvest.

I've never heard of a variety that likes full shade.

I have alpne ones that seed every where under bushes and on the northside of the house not much fruit though.

The birds steal my strawberries and dump their droppings under my flowers, so I get lots of young plants started... but nary a fruit - too much shade.
