RASPBERRY PLANTS IN POTS
« on: February 11, 2014, 20:30 »
Hi there
I am new to this forum. I acquired an allotment in early summer last year. It was totally overgrown and neglected. I have managed to get about 2 thirds into a presentable state. It is not a large plot so I am trying to utilise every available space. I will be erecting a large greenhouse close to the boundary fence this will leave a gap of approximately 3 ft. Is it feasible to grow raspberry plants in large pots i.e 20 inch deep X 20 diameter. This would allow me just enough space to water and feed them. Also The RANGE are selling plants for £2.99 much cheaper than the garden centre. They are described as autumn fruiting. Does this mean they will fruit on the new growth this year? They are presently pruned down to about 6 inches growth.

Thank you

Yes, Autumn fruiting will fruit on this years growth, raspberries don't do very well in pots in my experience though.

A friend of mine grows raspberries in pots on a commercial basis. Automatic watering and feeding ensures they do fine, he discards the plants every 3 years and replaces with new stock. Try Swanley village nursery on Amazon , you might get a nice surprise with the price.

if you've got a local "poundland" they stock em and name says it all about the price ,or see if your fellow allotment holders can give you any cuttings

It's not cuttings that you're after, but the suckers. Raspberries grow like weeds a most plot holders have to keep them in check and will have a lot to get rid of.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
