raspberry canes in pots
« on: January 01, 2013, 17:22 »
I have managed to salvage some raspberry canes and the area I want to plant them is full of weed and god knows what else, which will get a dose of roundup in summer. So I was thinking of putting them into pots now for 12 months and staking them. What do you guys think?

I kept some rasps in pots for a year, while waiting to plant them on the plot. That worked ok but they didn't fruit very well, despite feeding and watering :(

stephent - you could strim/ mow the area, pull out any nasty weeds like brambles or docs, cover with weed membrane, make some holes, plant your raspberries through this and then put a thick layer or bark chips on top of the matting.

I have mine in large planters (don't have much space and they can be rather invasive) and I agree with Mum in that it is difficult to keep them watered and fed for a good crop.
I think as long as you can add some water retaining gel and slow release food granules to your potting mix they would be fairly happy.

You have to remember though that the new canes that are thrown up can come up quite a distance away from the parent. They would be trying to push through the membrane.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If t'were me, I'd pot them up for now, then as soon as the ground is workable I'd dig the section for the raspberries well, give it a dose of rotted manure or good compost, build any support structures needed and then plant them out and tie them in (Autumn ones are usually Ok without any support in my experience)

A mulch of old autumn leaves will see them right then for the season

As DD said, runners for the next lot of caes would find membrane a hindrance.

They rarely perform well in pots, but would be Ok in builder's bags of compost for a year if you really can't get to clear the spot sooner
