Another problem - Carrots this time!!
« on: September 01, 2013, 21:53 »
I have never had this happen before with any carrots I have ever grown - and I've grown a few!!

This happened with 'Sugarsnax 54' - a variety I have never tried before but it has only happened to one carrot! ??? ??? ???

Any ideas anyone??

There's a carrot museum ::) :lol:

And trust you to know about it mum!! :lol: 8)

You'd think that more of my carrots would be like that - they all got sown together and they al get watered or not watered together! ???

It looks a bit scary I think!! :lol:

I'm really not having much luck with carrots this year!

Normally I'm pretty good with carrots - they might fork fairly often but they're still yummy and usable but what with the splitting above and now this...

I've grown 2 varieties this year (neither of which I've grown before - nor will I grow again!! :lol: ) 'Sugarsnax 54 F1' which is the split one in the photo at the start of this thread and 'Amsterdam forcing 3 (I think)' which were freebies and is the one in the photo below.

What do you think had caused this bizarre deformity - the narrow waist is a bit rotten but only in some? And they're pretty much all like it! ::)

Strangely enough I've had some like that this year.  I think it happened when we had that prolonged hot dry spell, followed by rain.

A bit like tomatoes, they tried to grow too quickly and split.  I don't waste them though, give them a good wash, cook them in a tiny amount of water and puree them.  Mine are in the freezer, waiting to be turned into soup!

I had lots of my 2nd sowing of carrots where the foliage was laying down.  I thought it was because of that bit of rain, but when I looked, slugs had chewed off the foliage and eaten the tops of loads of the carrots.

There are still loads in the fridge, so I don't really want to dig up anymore yet!   But I will if I have to!  :(
