Calcium egg shell problem advise needed please
« on: October 06, 2013, 18:24 »
Hi,ive had 1 of my hens lay eggs with a lot of white spots on them just recently, ive read it could be a defective shell gland?,im not sure which hen it is but i do have 1 thats has also started to continuously go round pecking all the other hens beaks  ??? it might not be that hen laying them eggs but it seems odd behaviour and coinsidental to me
Is there a solution to my egg problem?and her irrating cleaning problem :)
Thanks julie

As long as the shell is hard, I wouldn't be worried. I think we can be too neurotic and get worked up for no reason.  I know I get like that at times!  As for the preening of others, my bird that is lowest in the pecking order regularly cleans up the others as does Top Bird. She likes to run a clean house, and so makes sure that everyone's beaks are nice and clean and shiny.

Hi ghost, thanks, the egg shell is fine :) im glad no one has said it could be curtains for the hen if it was a defective gland  :)
Lilac is very irratating to watch ,she just doesnt stop pecking beaks,i hope she lets another take over the chore soon as its turning into ocd
Ive only been a chicken owner since june,so i do try to watch them and learn as much as i can..without seeming obsessive  i plan to keep hens my forever so i need to get experienced especially on basic problems/ailments as soon as  :) x

I think we tend to watch our hens more than children! As long as the cleaning process doesn't turn into feather pecking (removing them) then be happy. One of my hens always lays eggs with little bumpy bits on them. She eats the most and so probably gets more calcium than the others that shows in the shell. The eggs are beautiful though, but I never stop monitoring them. You'll have worries galore but much more pleasure from your hens. What sort do you have and how many?
