Some advice needed please
« on: October 06, 2013, 13:43 »
Hi all,

I have a 2 year old cream leg bar who, along with the rest of my chickens, has decided to moult. They have been at it for about 6 weeks now. The cream leg bar looks a bit rough, as moulting chickens do, but I have noticed that she looks worse than the rest. I can hear a gurgling in her throat when she breathes and she has her mouth open most of the time. I have just caught her and segregated her and I notice that she is half the weight she used to be. Her crop is also empty. She was also a bit easy to catch. What should I do to treat this do you think?

Thanks in advance
:)

Have they been wormed recently with flubenvet?

Is there any discharge from eyes / beak?

Have you checked the coop thoroughly for red mite?

What bedding are you using in the coop?

Some birds seem to go through the moult easily and some do have a tougher time of it.

I have limited knowledge with illnesses but someone will be along soon to help.

Hi,

Yes they have been recently wormed
No red mites and no discharge
No bedding in the coop at the moment

If it is a particularly bad moult will I have to keep her isolated until its over in case it's something nasty?

Her crop should only be empty first thing on a morning at other times she should have some food in it.  Was her crop squishy?  If so she could have sour crop, there is some information on it HERE

You could try her on a little cat food as a pick-me-up, they do get quite down with a bad moult.  :)

Hi all, thanks for tha advice so far. No her crops not squishy, just nothing in it. I've seen sour crop before - I don't think this is it. She has to eaten anything since yesterday and still has very loud breathing.

Not sure what to do for the best. She has molted before but nothing like this

you could try a little syringe feed - take care not to get it in her lungs - tiny bit at a time

I mix a little a little layers pellets with a bit of soup to make it watery - has worked for me in the past

you can add tonic into drinking water too as a pick me up

You could try syringing a little honey, stewed apple and crushed garlic - ANHBUC's recipe it sounds good to me for helping appetite, feeding and hydrating. :)
