Sunshine F1 Squash.
« on: August 30, 2013, 10:52 »
How can I tell when to harvest them?

They've been orange for weeks which seemed somewhat early for a winter squash, I don't want to leave them out there to rot are they really finished already?

Have the stem handles started to split/look corky yet - that's when it's ripe  ;)

I'll have a look in the 'morrow. I noticed 2 more of the spaghetti squash had dropped off  >:( decent size fruit too  :( - Im not sure if it's the weather conditions or the soil but all the squash plants are looking decidedly sickly.

It does look like the plant is giving up for the season, but as long as it here is no frost risk or extended periods of rain, you could leave the fruit to ripen and harden the skin more for storage.

I've cut squash before and laid them out on the greenhouse staging to get the skins to really cure properly.  Could be an option if the weather turns suddenly  :)
