Potatoes ruined by slugs!
« on: August 15, 2013, 22:15 »
Just dug my remaining first earlies up as the damage to them has been gradually getting worse week to week.
It started with the odd tiny hole or two but has progressed to some spuds being almost totally hollow inside.
Out of about 70 spuds probably 25 are ok as in either untouched or just minor damage, the rest are either hollowed out to some degree or starting to rot.
The variety is Rocket and we've been enjoying them for many weeks now so not too miffed about it.
Has anyone else had the same problem and which varieties were they, also i'd like to know which varieties you have grown that were untouched?
Idea for a poll maybe?
After a 3 year wait i finally have my allotment. HELP! (2/10/11)

Last week I dug up the last of my Rocket, mainly fear that if left much longer slugs and wireworm could do to damage. Very few had any damage.
Today I have cleared 3 half rows of Charlotte for the same reason. Thinking opening a chip shop cos of the size of most of them. 90% have come out clean and dry, I found one large wireworm and one of those slugs with an orange frill. Some at the end of the rows have a fair bit scab.

I've had a lot of this damage over the years when I've grown them in the allotment beds.
That led to me growing more taters in bags of compost which I know, is the more expensive way to grow them but I have had better crops.

I did risk putting 'Vales Sovereign' in the ground and these have not been attacked to badly at all ;)

Have a maincrop in the garden called 'Robinta' - no idea what these are like. They're currently still perfectly leaved and flowered so they must be a late maincrop.
No idea when they'll come out the ground or in what state

I have started to notice occasional slug damage but so far it has been limited to a couple of potatoes in every 20 or so, and I have been able to cut away the damaged parts and eat the remainder. I think mine were Arran Pilot.

I wondered about digging up the remainder but I understand that 1st and 2nd earlies do not store well.

doesn't sound like they are storing too well in the ground either ...  ;)

The potatoes don't "go off" (providing they were sound to start off with and dried off before going into storage) but they do lose water and feel soft and look wrinkly as time goes on - if you can get past that and able to peel them, they'll be fine and actually make very nice chips or roasties too  :D  My second earlies keep me going right up to Christmas and occasionally even longer (last year's crops in particular - I put it down to all the rain last year and taking up more water) but come February/March despite cool dark and dry storage, they along with even the main crop spuds start sprouting like mad.  Then it's back to the occassional supermarket spuds and lots of pasta or rice instead until the new season ...

I wouldn't try to store first earlies, but most of the second earlies do store quite well - maybe not round to next year's harvest  ::) but for a good few months  ;)

Some potatoes seem to attract more slugs than others - JBA have a list of slug resistant varieties  :)

Desiree is a rock hard spud and I think the slugs lose interest and slither off to pastures new.

I must admit first year growing I have been amazed by my Desiree only put them in mid June and harvested one plant couple of days ago due to it having black leg....... I was surprised by how large the yield was from the one plant already after it only being in the ground for 8 weeks. Definitely will grow next year
