Tomato feeding
« on: June 28, 2013, 19:33 »
I have a small greenhouse and in the borders are 6 money maker toms, when planting them i put some chicken pellets in the soil.
Now my toms are well away like most gardeners, with flowers on.
Is it time yet to feed with liquid tom feed, they are just about 3 feet and i am in the south of the UK.
Thanks Reg
I'm lost without my SatNav.

...whereas I start feeding with 1/4 strength or weaker, almost from the start, gradually building up to full strength when there are loads of trusses forming.  In my greenhouse in the shade it can be two weeks between watering, and I like to build up a excess of fertilizer in the soil.

Worse that can happen is that you are wasting money on unnecessary fertilizer that gets washed down the drain.  Except that I use last year's tomato compost for this year's pumpkins.

And the used pumpkin compost as a mulch on next years peas.

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

In the past, I have mixed 5ml of liquid tomato food into 1 litre of water and feed each individual plant 1/3 of a litre of this strength every day (plus additional water later). For the past two years I have used the Levington slow release granule plugs. 3 to a plant on the final potting up, then just water daily. I have had excellent resultsd using both methods, but the slow release are the idle mans solution.  :)
