Garlic
« on: June 20, 2013, 14:23 »
Just found two garlic bulbs (Solent Wight) in the bottom of a seed box. They are fresh and solid with no shoots nor rotting cloves.  Would I be wasting my time planting them now for over wintering and harvesting next spring(assuming they grow of course)?

I think you'll just confuse them by planting now, the normal time woiuld be from autumn through to early spring. In theory they'd still get a cold spell which they need, but at the wrong stage in their growing cycle. If they're not sprouting or rotting, why not keep them and plant in the autumn? :)

Thanks for the reply Arugula

Will keep them somewhere cool and dark then until the Autumn and see if they are still fresh enough to plant.

Thanks again

Garlic needs frost? I planted mine in April this year and leaves starting to go yellow at ends, so don't know what I will get, never mind everydays is a school day, so I will plant some out this autum  for next year harvest.

I will take this chance to thank every one for help within this forum, I have a large garden, no experience and no other around to ask so it is try and see and read this forum to see where I went wrong

Not actually frost, just a cold enough spell, but it depends what kind it is. Softneck, hardneck, spring or autumn planing, elephant... they all have different requirements.

If you have a bit of space, you can plant them out and make a note that these are late ones. This should at least keep them hydrated and in better shape for the fall. If they die, then at least you tried.
