Slow progress
« on: June 04, 2013, 13:43 »
Folks,

I live 55 degrees north (Newcastle) , and my veg seems to have stagnated.

New allotment this year, I did all the prep work in the autumn, pH balanced etc., but progress to date has been really slow.

Onions and peas are dwarfed, broadbeans are getting there, but yard longs germinated then just turned up their toes. Pots seem to be doing well above ground ( they are containerised).

Dandelions and mare's tail seem to be doing ok!!!! and autumn raspberries have already begun to set.

Just wondering if folk in my neck of the woods have experienced similar retarded growth.

Thanks

Make do

It's the same down Souf, not just in your neck of the woods  ::)

I posted in chatting on the plot that this is the coldest spring (March - May) for 50 years..........explains it all doesn't it?

A lot of the threads on here are about poor growth or germination - we're all suffering this year  :(

I too am feeling a little despondent, wondering whether anything will have time to mature before the frosts arrive! So it is definitely not just you. :)

When did you plant all these things out, makedo?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Don't worry - its not just you, and it'll all come good in the end, promise  ;)  Although if you were sat next to the harbinger of doom (my OH) last week, when they said on the weather about some areas having a frost, he pointed out that that meant there could possibly only be 12 weeks or so before the FIRST frost could arrive .  I rarely take any notice of anything he says, which is just as well.  Just keep planting - it'll be fine  :D

Bit further south here, same problems though. Swede and potatoes seem to be going well so not all bad! Rhubarb is the best (this is the rhubarb triangle apparently).

Our rhubarb is growing well too! Lots of yummy vodka this autumn I think!! Blackberry bushes are doing well here in sunny Devon, am thinking about trying my hand at wine!! There's only so much crumble one family can eat!! I'm sure we'll all catch up and have a glorious Indian summer -- ever the optimist!

Guday,

I'm a little further south, about 15 mins to be honest !!!

I have a small alotoment at the back of my house and although i agree things are a little behind all my stuff outside seams to be growing OK - Onions about 16 Inches tall, Savoy cabbage and iceberg lettece which are in the ground coming on well and the ones sown later in pots are OK as well. Pots in containers have just been covered with more compost as they poked their heads through the other day - last year was the same for the pots but when i went to harvest there was a lot of green but no potatoes - RAGIN !!!!!

Stuff in greenhouse is a little slow though - chillis, toms, cukes and peppers etc.

So prob not what you wanted to hear, but then again it is 12 degrees hotter in the holiday resort of south shields than other places !!!  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

Good luck and maybe feed them a little more - Thats what i'm about to start doing !!!!

Cheers
Keith

I've noticed a marked difference in my chilli plants this year, they are healthy enough but seem a fair bit shorter than last year.

I'm putting it down to the weather and not being able to plant them out as early as last year. Still plenty of time for them so no panic yet.
