The place where we normally get the hens feed does not sell grit but the owner said that he had pigeon grit. Has anybody ever used that for their hens??

Well, I have just bought a 25 kg bag which has pictures on the  outside of all the creatures you can use it for, and they include a pigeon and a hen.

Incidentally I got it from the Farm & Pet Place for £6.99.  An emergency supply  which I bought last week from Pets At Home (because I'd suddenly found out that my hens were coming two days later) was £1.99 for 1 kg.  When I worked this out I had to check with a calculator because I thought I'd got it wrong.  Pets At Home charge over SEVEN times as much!!!

I recon grit's grit. My gang free range and forage out all sorts so I have never really bothered providing grit as they completely ignored the stuff I bought when I got them all those years ago. Mine seem to just find their own (probably mainly at the bottom of puddles and ponds). I suspect that they are all much of a muchness unless you have very tiny birds like quail who need something closer to sand.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Thank you for the replies.

Kuikentje- that is just day light robbery. Trouble is some people may not have ready access to a farm feed suppliers.

Kate - my hens and ducks have a very large run and probably get plenty of grit when they grub about  but I just want to be sure they have enough - so think I will get some of the pigeon grit.

A guy I know who keeps chickens saves all his egg shells and bakes them in the oven & then crushes them and gives them back to the hens!!!

they still manage to put themselves right where you are about to put your feet, you have to dance around our aviary at the moment trying to avoid the quails and fledglings.  :nowink:

True, but I think there are plenty of Farm and Pet Place places.  All on out of town retail parks, unfortunately.  But I justify it by getting my bedding there too, big bags of shavings for horses, which work out a lot cheaper.  I think Pets At Home is a rip-off anyway.  Only my opinion, of course,
