Growing Digitalis
« on: May 24, 2013, 11:07 »
Hi All,
I have bought 3 Digitalis plants http://www.thompson-morgan.com/flowers/flower-plants/perennial-and-biennial-plants/foxglove-illumination/p92671TM

I have never grown them before, I put the plants out about 3 weeks ago in a sheltered spot and they haven't moved. How can I help them, do they need a feed, when can I expect flowers this season or next?

Thanks

It really depends how small the plants are.
As a perennial it should flower this year - but I doubt it will unless the weather warms up and the plants can put on some quick growth.

You should never have to buy anymore - they come back and they double up too
It has been cold, a feed may help but i'd think just warmer temps will encourage the growth.

I never feed mine - mind you, I never planted them either! ??? :D

You might get flowers  this season, but most of mine are bienniel. They are budding now, so I think if yours are still very small you might have to wait until next season for flowers. :)

Even when I've purchased them they never flowered until the following year. And they do like it warm and a bit shady.

Hard to believe that anyone should actually have to buy these, they just seem to occur naturally.
I would gladly have sent a dozen for postage cost only. I usually have too many and have to cull some.
Self seed merrily, like violets and snapdragons, forget me nots, aquilegias and  nasturtiums.
Foxgloves do not mind shade and dry conditions, any soil type, really easy going and bees love them.

Mine are all in the shade next to my 6ft fence. They are suited to shade. ;)

After taking out about 40 last year I have decided to let them be for this year and they are growing everywhere. That said, I was at Chelsea flower show on Saturday and there was a pure white foxglove so I bought some seeds  . Mine are all biennial too so I'm looking forward to seeing what flowers this year.
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!
