How do I go about growing these?
« on: March 27, 2008, 15:32 »
I had some hyacinths growing outside in tubs over the winter.  I took them out when they had finished flowering and just stuck them in a tub thinking I would heel them in somewhere for next year and I have just noticed what appear to be seeds or bulbils? growing on the stem.  there were a lot of bees buzzing around when they were flowering.

How do I go about propogating these.  do I leave on the plant to ripen/go brown and then plant them?  Will they form bulbs?  Any help gratefully received.

Sorry no idea but I assume that they would take quite a while to get to flowering size ... would it be worth it ?  How patient are you ???

Not very but thought I could just leave them to it.  It's almost impossible to get bulbs over here.  I just got lucky as they were in the local supermarket last November so bought a few.

Nothing ventured nothing gained  :tongue2:  :D  ... do you have a cool shade house??  That's what we used to use in Nairobi.  Might need a coarse kind of compost do you think???

I've got a sort of shed built with breezeblocks.  It is certainly shaded and cool.  So you wouldn't leave them outside then? :?

Leave the seed pods to mature and turn brown then harvest the seeds and sow immediately. You could just leave the flower stems to shed by themselves if you are not going to dig the growing area.

Leaving until they look ripe works every year for me with my lilies. No special treatment just nip them off into pot of compost sit on the wall outside and off they go. By the way I did it with some hyathincths the other year and have now got beautiful white perfumed ones where my beloved despot of a cat is buried. I redesigned the garden so that where he is everything is or has white in it. He was a long haired white. Good luck but I think if I can do it then anyone can.
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!
