A feather plucker
« on: March 04, 2013, 16:08 »
4 out of my 5 girls have bald bums which I put down to them moulting and still laying hence no new feathers.
I have just let them out for a roam around the garden and caught the 1 hen plucking the feathers out the other hens! She is the one who had a complete moult and is looking all pretty while the others have bald bums!! They have all been together for the last 8 months or so and nothing has changed so I am not sure why she is doing it.
Is there something missing from her diet?

Do the anti pecking sprays work and if so how often do you have to spray them? They have bald butts so look pretty silly

Thanks
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries

Moulting does take it out of them.  You could try them on a little egg food used for birds when they are breeding and need a pick me up.  I have been using Versele-Laga Breeding food for Pheasants and Quails for my hens.  I bought it for the quails when they were moulting but they didn't eat it.  You only need a little, add a bit of water and they love it.  It has dried egg, cake, seeds and dried insects in it.

I have never used anti pecking spray but most of those who have posted about it say it doesn't work very well.  This could be down to how regular it is applied though.
