Blueberry care
« on: February 23, 2013, 22:06 »
At the end of last year I bought 2 blueberry bushes which went in the garden in a spot that'll be far too shady.

I'd like to move both to my new lottie but I have a few questions.

Firstly, is it ok to move them? They are covered in buds, but I'm presuming that as they went in at the end of last years growing season they shouldn't have put out much root yet?

is there any special preparation they need to give them the best start on the plot?  The plot is sheltered and is south facing situated next to a very thin line if tallish hedging.

Lastly, is 2 enough to get cross pollination? It's hard to tell what other plot holders have got at the moment obviously!

Thanks in advance!

You should be okay to move them now. Dig a bit beyond where you think the original root ball was so you minimize any root damage.

They need acidic soil so any ericaceous mix you can add will help, along with manure and either ammonium sulphate or sulphur powder to the holes.

If you have 2 different varieties, you're okay, but its likely that other plotholders have blueberries as well.

Cool, I'll whip them out later.  We're lucky to be on acid soil here, so that's no problem at all.  Hopefully it won't snow!

Good luck with these, Matt. We have two on The Patch, and one is struggling, so we'll temporarily move the two we have at home (in pots), and plonk them nearby while the bees get going!

Nothing like a bit of moving around...

I'm hoping we can make a success of them.  Our 4yo and I eat about 6 punnets of blueberries a week! Might well go and get some more plants!
