Seaweed meal supplies?
« on: February 15, 2012, 17:32 »
A few years ago I used to buy 25 kg bags of seaweed meal, and very good it was too - improved the soil and plant health no end.  Now after moving to new ground, all I can find is a much finer ground product at an exorbitant price.  I could only afford 5 kgs and that's not going to go far on two allotments!  Can anybody point me in the direction of the coarser agricultural grade at an affordable price?

It's almost as if organic gardening is turning into a luxury hobby for people who can afford to spend more on growing their own food than it would cost them to buy it.  Is anybody else getting the same impression?

I'm not familiar with the product at all.

It might be worth asking your local lotty association whether it's on their horticultural supplier's list and, if so, they'd be able to order you a bag when they next do an order.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ouch!!

Just googled what you're on about.

They want HOW MUCH for just that much??!!

Do you live near the coast? Or 'near-ish'?

I know you need permission to 'harvest' it off the beaches, but maybe that's what you/me/us may need to do.  :(

For the amount we would take, I don't think it would harm the environment, would it ?

have you thought of using calcified seaweed, which is great if your soil can take the lime ;)

It might also be sold under the name of kelp meal, which is what I buy over here.

try local horse animal feed  merchants..

the only difference in between the animal grade and organic range for gardening is the size if the grain it has been ground down to..

please see link to the supplier of seaweed  i used but costs £36.99 plus postage... http://www.seaweedproducts.co.uk/organic_animal_feed

plant range £36.99 per 15kg...
keep it organic and you will see the difference including taste......

I bought seaweed meal from www.pinetumproducts.co.uk. They have seaweed meal or calcified, plus rock dust, delivered or collection (Glos). The cheapest supplier of rockdust I've seen is DT Browns.

Take a look at ' organiccatalogue '. They have seaweed meal 25kg-£37.95, seaweed for animals 25kg-£29.95, Rockdust 20kg-£13.65. No p+p for orders of £40+.

Thankyou for your replies, I got mine from the Organic Catalogue but it's the fine ground stuff and treble what I used to pay.  I'd seen it advertised in bulk for small-holders n the past - was probably in Smallholding magazine or Home Farm come to think of it! That's probably where I should be looking then, assuming either of these magazines are still on the go.  I'd forgotten that.
