Another silly newbie question re leeks
« on: January 12, 2013, 20:05 »
Hello again guys,

Some of you may be getting fed up of newbie questions by now so I apologise in advance

Anyway, got my seeds today and according to the instructions on the leek packet (as well as the tomato packets!?!?) I should start to sow them indoors this month.

Is this really a good time to be starting leeks?

Thanks
Jim

I wouldn't sow them until end of Feb/March at the earliest

Here's one way of sowing them

Thanks Mum. I didn't think it was right to sow them now. I wonder why the packets say so?

In John's veg book he says you can sow leeks under glass in January but it is more usual to sow them March or April.  Perhaps it is an early variety?

I never sow Leeks before the beginning of April and I always get a good crop. The one exception to that rule was when I was growing them to show at our local show, they needed a January sowing to get good exhibits by late August. If you just want Leeks for the kitchen during winter then April is soon enough to be starting.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

Oh I followed the packs instructions and planted a few in to modules last weekend! I did think its way too early they surely won't germinate

I would tend to follow the packet instructions, but that said, I find early sowings of leeks only lead to another sowing later on  :D

If you are in an area affected by allium leaf miner,  :(  you stand more chance of avoiding the first flights of the adults (March/April) if you sow later in the year.

I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I sowed a few in January a couple of years back, the whole lot bolted, fortunately it they weren't the bulk of the crop. The rest were sown in my usual month of March and they were fine.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sow my leeks in the middle of January, in a cold greenhouse, and let them come on steadily i very rarely have leeks that bolt.
