Compost at room temperature?
« on: January 16, 2013, 08:56 »
I am going to use compost that has been stored in the garage (don't ask why it is stored there) cor germinating seeds and wondered if I need to warm it up first?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Put it in the microwave!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Really? To both answers.
How water I sort of get ....... But microwave? I guess it will warm it up. I can see the face of OH and daughters if I leave some in there by mistake. They already moan about having to share a bathroom windowsill with to transplanted seedlings!!

Yes really!

You can quite easily do it, a seed tray's worth at a time.

Trial and error, probably a good starting point and do it 10 seconds at a time until you get there.

Do it before you sow the seeds!

I can picture it now, a compost explosion inside the microwave!

The next picture would be of the wife with the rolling pin raised above her head!

My compost is also in the garage, and prior to sowing onion and leek seeds at the weekend, I`ll just bring the opened bag into the house and leave it near a radiator for a day.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I usually bring a bucket full inside and leave it under the table for a few days, that way it's the same temperature as the room. If you heat it up then it won't necessarily stay at that heat anyway, better to get it to the temperature it's going to stay at.

That said, nuking it in the microwave might well sterilize it too :D

I'm not suggesting you get it toasty warm, it obviously won't stay at that temperature, but the technique can be used to bring a small quantity quickly up to ambient temperature if you've forgotten to bring some in the day before.

Microwaves only agitate water molecules so unless you end up steaming your compost in the micro, it won't sterilise it.  I'd be wary of the compost ingredients if you're intending on using the microwave as some brands have little balls of slow release fertilizer in them which are likely to explode in a micro and may realease large quantities of concentrated fertilizer into the compost.

I'm not sure if you need to warm it first.  It would make germination quicker if the soil is already warm but if your not in a rush the soil will warm up to room temp anyway then the germination will start.
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller
