I’m trying to follow ‘The Five-year Crop Rotation’ plan, which recommends that “Following the potatoes, in the winter the soil is limed heavily taking the ph up towards neutral”.

For peat soils allotment.org recommends liming at a rate of 1.7 kg/m2 or3.13 lb/yd2. Looking at the J Arthur Bowers site, however, the recommended rate for peat soils is 105-210 g per sq metre (3-6oz per sq yd).

Unless I’m being as daft as normal, these figures seem incompatible.

I hope it’s not too late to lime, so how much lime should I apply per square yard on heavy clay soil? And how long after liming can seeds be sown or plants put in.

Any advice for a novice would be most welcome.

check the ph level of your soil then you'll know exactly how much to add...
