Hi, I want to get Broad beans fora show in August
« on: October 31, 2012, 09:22 »
When should i sow for Broad beans to mature in August, i can't seem to find a sowing to harvest time anywhere, I dont usually bother with this vegetable at this time of the year as it seems a little late in the season. Best regards to all, Dave

On May 29th I tried a second sowing of Broad Beans and they cropped really well into August.  You have to be very careful with a late sowing as they are very susceptible to pests and disease, that is why most crops are sown early, but with care you should have a good harvest to show.

I've moved this thread from the "Welcome" forum, but wasn't sure whether to move it to GYO, or the Show Bench!

I decided on the former as maybe the Sowing/Harvest chart may be helpful to those who've not come across it before.

That table is not a lot of help. At a guess I would sow in late April, but that is only a guess. All depends on weather.

Suttons mention in their catalogue that Listra is good for late sowing.

Black aphids will be your enemy. Their colonies not only smoother young shoots but also young pods not may not develop and will certainly be discoloured for showing.

My first sowing of broad beans this spring was completely wiped out by slugs and weevils.   In hope rather than expectation I sowed some more Crimson flowered ones direct in May.   Much to my surprise they turned out to be one of my most productive crops in a completely dire season.   I picked the last pods last week!   They didn't get chocolate spot or blackfly and were still throwing up flowers.   So I would definitely try a later sowing, you may be OK.

Not hugely helpful but just stagger the plantings - this year my broad beans were shockingly late due to the weather. I still wished I'd planted more as mine were over and eaten by the time of the local show.
Just now need to track down the local shower who entered beans around a foot or more long. I suspect he's been storing his best seed for years - and feeding the plants well.
