Salad Burnet - allow to flower or start again?
« on: April 18, 2011, 14:33 »
Hello,
Last year I planted Salad Burnet and had lots of smashing leaves from it - amazing how it keeps going!
This year it's growing stalks with flowers on, and I read the young leaves are best to eat, and a site selling seeds reckons it's best to start afresh each year.

Is it best to let it just go on growing its flowers, to take out those stalks and prevent flowering, or indeed to start again, for best flavour?

With many thanks,
Richard (Gonnate)

I am not familiar with the particular plant but generally with salad leaf crops, once it flowers then it's past its best and may taste bitter.

Start again is my advice.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

yes, I would plant more: the taste once they have flowered can go from being glorious pre-flowering to absolutely rank/beyond bitter etc....

Thanks both Yorkie & Jonajo - that seems fairly conclusive, then.
I'll just have to turn it into compost, methinks... though I'll eat the good bits first  :)

... can't find a smiley which shows tongue licking round pleased face, someone ought to invent one for this place!

Happy growing,
