Nowt Sown yet...Plot still waterlogged !
« on: March 30, 2010, 13:13 »
Well it's supposed to be British summer time. :D

Had plans over winter, marked out beds, spuds chitting, started to dig and then the rain came !

That was 4 weeks ago and still the soil is too wet to dig !

My green fingers are itching to start something that I brought a small home growing kit for the balacony just to start something off !

Hopefully I'll start sowing this weekend indoors and maybe get something done down the plot if the weather remains settled here in London Town !

Why do the best laid plans............ ::)

My lottie is like yours - too wet for anything! - but I looked up after finishing my lunch, the sky was bright blue, and I thought that I could just pop out and take the growing tips out of the sweet peas in the cold frame  for a breath of air.

Half way through - just at that  point where you have to finish it  - the heavens opened.   >:( Again.   :( Soaked.  :   Again.  And by the time I had finished and got in and changed etc etc, the sun is out.    :D

Still, Thamesmead? That is terribly bad luck.

Ah well could be a lot worse I suppose. Just means I'm a month behind until I can get my beds well above the water table which I estimate about 6-8 inches

Be guided by the seasons, your instinct and knowledgable advice but not the instructions on the seed packet. If you can start things off indoors or in the greenhouse in pots at the moment then do so. If you cant, wait until things cheer up and dont get stressed. Last year I was still harvesting tomatoes well into October in my (unheated) greenhouse. I firmly believe that sowing "guidelines" are exactly that... follow them if you can and it feels right. All I have in so far is my alliums and lots of stuff in pots but I am in no way worried.

Sound advice from Ferris. Trust your instincts. Every year is different and if it looks too wet or feels too cold it probably is. Plants have an amazing ability to catch up and still give you a rewarding crop. As a golden oldie I'm well used to false starts and late spurts  :D
