Sadly I can't grow caulis because of club root, so I'm a bit envious. I'm trying "Clapton" this year which is supposed to have the highest club root resistance ever.

... and a jolly good sprinkling of lime. Good Luck mate! ;) :)
Life begins... On the kitchen windowsill.

I've tried everything, we must have a particularly virulant varient of club root!

Ever seen a radish with club root? I can't even grow those on the plot. >:(
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

... yes, very funny. :nowink: :) I know what you mean. We must have 7 or 8 pairs of scissors, and I can bet at any one time, there's at least half a dozen of them in the damb dishwasher. ::)

The plot I share has bad clubroot but a combination of resistant variety, lots of lime, and more important, repotting the brassica until it has a well established healthy root system and planting out with loads of lime and crushed eggshells seems to be doing the trick  ;)

For all those bottling out of growing caulis - give it a try, what have you got to lose?  I planted a couple out last year after a disastrous potting up experience (okay, they got seriously pot bound because I got behind with everything, not to mention long spindly stems) so I didn't hold much out for any success only to get the best caulis ever  :D  So my advice would be to Go for it!  And where's that best cauli cheese recipe to die for?
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Nobby wrote allways grow caulies in the cool shade
as soon as they get too hot or dry they bolt
best to plant them behind the beans and cover with the thickest netting you have
that way they will stay nice and tight and white

Nobby might have cracked it, last year all my cauli’s were great for the first time ever, they were covered in the green debris netting, so that could be the reason.

Well I grew Caulis r the first time last year and they were all massive!

Beginners luck no doubt. They were fairy exposed and in full sun and I didnt cover or fold over the leaves but they all, thats 20+ grew to a huge size. They were about four times the ones you get in supermarkets and my freezer is nice and stocked with them.  ::)

I dug in lime and really firmed them in and that was it. I always grow brassicas in pots first to get a good root system and plant out in May.

Hope that helps,

Cudders

I always grow 'Jerome' for overwinter cauliflowers and get fantastic results, with heads between 4-6lbs in weight. Sow July- Aug.  harvest March-April.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I'm growing winter caulis for the first time this year. I'm eagerly watching for signs of a head but none yet and they're sitting right where I want to sow my carrots. What with 10 purple sprouting brocoli and 14 caulis my new roots bed is still half full of brassicas!

Last summer was so rotten I doubt there was enough sun to bother them!  Wish I'd grown more brassicas last year.

Hi, caulie growing eh! the holy grail of gardening. All i know which isn't much is you have to keep them growing if they suffer a check all you get is little curds (and i do mean little) and thats all. I've practicaly given up on caulies for calabrese so easy to grow and in my opinion better eating.

Hi, just adding a rider to my last post my one exception is winter caulie ( which is'nt really a caulie but white heading brocolli ) planted out in autumn they curd in about April are easy to grow and are just like a caulie and come at just the right time when things are a little sparse.
PS they grow a little tall so don't worry.
