Seed Potato Storage - not chitting!
« on: January 21, 2010, 16:10 »
In the hopes of an allotment "very soon now"..... I bought a 3Kg pack of early potatoes rather than my usual 10 tubers.  Given that even "very soon now" will never mean I have a plot ready for them at the usual time how can I store them to go in later?  How do people store them to plant later for Christmas new potatoes?

I asked in the shop (local independent garden centre) and was told cool, frost-free but as light as possible.

I would think that chitting advice - light means they will grow.  If you want to keep them for Christmas pots, you need to keep them cold, dry and dark; in effect kid them on that spring hasn't arrived until you are ready to start them off.

Others will tell you when is the best time to start them off.

I would of thought you could keep them for Christmas planting, however I am prepared to be corrected. I would agree with keeping in the cool and light as mentioned by your lgc, the spruts will only grow an inch or so until you plant them. If left in the dark I reckon the spruts will be long and leggy and you can't stop it growing.

Put them in a box and leave them in the fridge. As long as its a few degrees above freezing they should be ok. Take them out a few weeks before you want to plant them and leave them in a light and airy place to start them off.
