Haven't had much time to see how Gracie was getting on today with packing hubby off to London.  When I got back, I notice Gracie had a pinkish stain on her back. Went out to poo pick hen house and there was a pool of thick blood in the floor.  Nearly keeled over with shock  I have been watching her for the last hour or so and she seems to be better!!! Hasn't gasped once so can only assume that the cyst was causing her a lot of pain and hopefully she will be fine now.  AND they don't have Mycoplasma!!!!!

So the cyst has erupted then.  I would keep a close check on it to ensure the wound looks clean and the other girls are not picking at it. They are a blood thirsty bunch these hens!

I will keep up with her antib's and slather the cyst in antiseptic when I bring her in.  Only problem is that since OH is awa, my stepson will have to hold her and has never held a chicken in his life.

You could hold the hen and get your stepson to gently apply the antiseptic.  That way you would cause less stress on the bird    When she's well you can teach him how to hold her

That would be a good plan but Ross is Epileptic and has a bad hand tremour so would probably end up squirting it her eye or up her nose

Just had a good look at the cyst and it's still quite big so will speak to vet tomorrow and see what she recommends cleaning it with.  Aye, this chicken keeping aint easy or cheep    sorry for that

Not easy or cheap but we wouldn't be withought it.

Really good news Gracie's feeling better!  It sounds as though another vet visit might be in order, though, re managing the wound & checking if there's anything underlying.
